Question of the Week: Why does “new music” get so little attention compared to “the classics?”
Why does “new music” get so little attention compared to “the classics?” Is so much music of past eras qualitatively better than most new music?

It seems to be a common assumption that it is difficult to program “new music.” In fact, the Berkley Symphony’s new music director is excited to be a part of a community that can handle such programming as John Adams’ Violin Concerto. What’s up with that? Why does “new music” seem to remain eclipsed by more “traditional” music in the classical music world?
Please share your thoughts in the comments below. We’ll be collecting them all and doing a post highlighting the best points before next week’s question. Hopefully by putting our heads together we can come up with some real innovative thought.
