Question of the Week: Does audience participation work in classical music?

Can audience participation be effectively integrated into classical music?

Whether in existing music or new music composed specifically with audience participation in mind, is there a way to make it work?  Does audience participation make sense as a way to engage and grow audiences?  What experiences have you had with audience participation in a classical music setting?
