Question of the Week: How should young musicians start their careers?

What is the best thing for recently (or not so recently) graduated music majors to do to kick start a career in music?  Should they become teachers?  Should they move abroad?  Get a job waiting tables?  Start their own ensembles? What?

Many young graduates who studied music find it difficult to make their way as they discover that many of the jobs have long been held by people who will likely remain in their positions for a long time to come.  What are your thoughts as either a young or experienced member of the classical music community on how the new members of our ranks can best position themselves to have long and successful careers in music?
